Rules Progress Meetings for MEP & BEP Students

  • Progress Meetings should stimulate involvement of staff (other than supervisor) and students in MEP/BEP projects.
  • MEP and BEP students will be divided in three thematic groups.
  • Progress meetings take place on Tuesday afternoon from 14.30-16.00.
  • Each MEP/BEP students prepares a progress report consisting of: title, starting date, supervisor(s), 2-3 line project summary, report of progress/results in the last period (use of figures and graphs are encouraged), plans for the next period. Indicated length is 1 page A4 (the back side can be used if the report contains graphs and figures).
  • The student presents his/her work in 10 minutes followed by discussion. Prepare this at home to get most out of this meeting.
  • Two progress meetings per group per quartile (8 per group/year). We try to avoid large gaps between successive meetings.
  • No progress meetings during exam weeks, Christmas, Summer and other TU Delft vacations/closing periods. Next academic year 2009-2010, the TU Delft will change to a quartile system of 4x 10 weeks, with 7 weeks of education (for more information about this subject go to: www.tudelft.nl/live/pagina.jsp).
  • When a group gets too big, we may redistribute the students or create an extra group.
  • Attendance by students and staff is compulsory. Staff will reserve the Tuesday afternoons for Progress Meetings (14.30 – 16.00) + Research Presentations (16.00 – 17.00), but it is not always possible due to other obligations.
  • If a staff member or a student is not able to attend the progress meeting, send an email to your supervisor and Mandy, she will then put it in the Outlook appointment, so everybody can see who should attend in the QI Calendar.
  • New students should get a summary of the ongoing projects in his/her group. Mandy will remind all students in a group to update their project description and send it to the new member.
  • All PhD students are invited to attend the progress meetings, but are only required to join the group that has connections to their own project.

Rules Research and Literature Seminars

  • All staff, BEP, MEP and Ph.D. students are required to attend the Research Presentations.
  • A Research Presentation should be informative for other group members.
  • Literature discussions will me merged with the research presentations.
  • Literature discussions should be based on high-quality papers that are interesting for a larger audience should be selected. Present the key-idea and why it is of interest.
  • Papers are selected by the student and approved by his/her supervisor.
  • MEP and Ph.D. students will be scheduled for 3 presentations per year. One of them may be a literature discussion after approval of the student’s supervisor.
  • The first presentation will not take place in the first three months of the project. The actual starting date is part of the MEP/BEP registration form.
  • In principle we will have two research presentations on Tuesday afternoon from 16.00-17.00. Each presentation should be limited to 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion. The time will be monitored strictly.
  • A week before the presentation the student or PhD should discuss their presentation with their supervisor.
  • If you do need more time then 30 minutes, please contact Mandy. She will try to reserve a double slot.
  • It can also be interesting to talk about the developments in your work field.
  • Everyone should save a copy of their presentation (including movies) on the “Group Data” - disk (folder:.K:istqiPresentations2009 )
  • No Research Presentations during Christmas, Summer and other TU Delft vacations/closing periods. Next academic year 2009-2010, the TU Delft will change to a quartile system of 4x 10 weeks, with 7 weeks of education (for more information about this subject go to: www.tudelft.nl/live/pagina.jsp).
  • Students that have exams, lectures, or lab classes are always excused not to attend.
